Summary

Establishing a maize milling facility
•    The Promoter of the project seeks to establish a maize milling facility in Ndola Copperbelt province of Zambia. There is an increased need for affordable maize mill products in the local Copper belt as well as the greater demands from the regional markets of East and Central Africa that are currently facing food shortages due to climate change, civil strife and other factor. The proposed agro processing facility is focused primarily to provide maize and wheat mill products for domestic consumption, stock feeds and industrial food processing purposes.

A well established entity in the beverages industry
•    The Promoters of the project are a well-established entity with particular competence in the beverages industry with a wide footprint in all parts of Zambia and the central and southern African region. With this extensive experience in the manufacturing and distribution of consumer goods, the promoters are well poised to take up the challenge of the proposed project
Zambian Milling Industry

Zambian Milling Industry
•    The Zambian Milling Industry is characterized by several players generally located along the line of rail. Most Millers operate maize mills producing Zambia’s staple food in the form of maize flour. Millers also produce stock feeds and maize grits for industrial food processing. Typically, the input maize is grown locally and subject to local market conditions that drive price and availability of the product. Because of the sensitivities of maize being the staple food in the country it is not uncommon to see government interventions in the market.

A dual market approach
•    It is envisaged that the project will focus on a dual market approach for both local and regional opportunities. The competitive markets present opportunity through the establishment of a robust and cost efficient manufacturing and distribution effort that services most parts of the Zambia’s Northern region as well as the exploits of the Great Lakes region and Angola.

Business Case
•    It is proposed that a 7.5 ton per hour plant be installed producing about 5,400 tons of maize products per month giving a monthly turnover of approximately $1.9M estimated from current averaged price index. With the current product throughput from the mix of players on the Copper belt there is an opportunity to competitively take 10 % of the market in the initial period.
